What is Wampum?

Simply put, wampum is the quahog shell formed into a bead but it is so much more than that.

Historically wampum was used for more than just ornamentation. It was used to create contracts, and treaties and also used in ceremonies such as weddings. Certain color patterns could be used to keep records and it has great spiritual value.

Wampum is still a very important element to many North American indigenous societies.
