What is Wampum?

Christopher and Lydia Chavez have been working together since 2004 when they learned how to make beads from the purple Quohog shell local to Long Island, NY.

Lydia A W-Chavez, a member of the Unkechaug Nation, is known for her wampum belts and weaving both traditional and contemporary styles.

Christopher L Chavez, Eastern Shoshone/Meskwaki, has carved shell sculptural work, historical tool recreations and custom wampum jewelry displayed in many museums and collections.

Simply put, wampum is the quahog shell formed into a bead but it is so much more than that.

Historically wampum was used for more than just ornamentation. It was used to create contracts, treaties and also used in ceremonies such as weddings. Certain color patterns could be used to keep records and it has great spiritual value.
